Modem on Com port 7?

Tony

I have an older clone with a Pentium 4 2.7ghz, 256 ram,
with xp home edition installed and updated. Something
that doesn't create a problem, but is annoying and I need
to know if it means my computer has been compromised or if
it is some manufacturer driver glitch. The modem is a
Broadexent v.92 and it installed onto the machine and
assigned com port 7? I only have 2 com ports as listed on
device manager, yet com ports 1 thru 6 are unavailable for
use and the first number is 7 when trying to change the
setting in it properties page. I run system information
and check out device manager and com ports 1 & 2 exist but
nothing is using any resources from them? System
information does not list any devices using ports 1 thru
6 and the modem is reported as using com port 7?

thanks in advance for any assistance if possible.

Do you have two physical com ports on your system?.. Com 1 is generally used
for serial mouse.. Com 2 is for connecting external communications devices..
thereafter, a com port will be assigned to a device when installed.. older
ISA modems had jumpers such that the user could determine the com port
used.. pci devices pick up on whatever they are set to by the manufacturer..
the idea is that the installation software will use a com port that couldn't
possibly interfere with anything else.. if your system is working well, try
to forget about it..

Thanks,

That sounds like the logical explanation. Since the device
s driver is only allowing one choice and that is com port
7 and one through six are unavailable. If that were true
you would think system information would show which
devices are using those resources. But, why com port 7?
Go figure. Thanks for the info.

Cheers
