I recently upgraded to XP on my home PC and after the initial installation
everything worked fine. But when I transfered my backed up files using an
external hard drive and XP's file transfer wizard I find that I can no longer
conect to my dail up internet service. A friend did the actual data transfer
and I think he changed or modified something in the process.

Is there a way I can restore the original settings for this device.

Thanks in advance

Depends on a lot of factors, including which modem is installed, which you
didn't state. At any rate, Start, Control Panel and double click "modem" or
perhaps "phone/Modem" and see if it has diagnostic settings there. If you
have the original documentation books from when you purchased the computer,
you may find some clues as to make and model of the modem and trouble
shooting tips there also.

It says I have a "Dell Data Fax Modem". Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm
not sure what I'm looking for in the diagnostic settings. Since no new
hardware has been added (at least not purposely) I just want to set the modem
to its state prior to the data transfer. But I understanding things may be
more complicated.

Thanks again
