modem noise

My friend got a new computer and uses AOL with a phone modem. I use cable
and have forgotten how to silence the phone modem (I guess). His modem
makes a lot of racket dialing and connecting, then goes silent. To help him
I went into Device Manager, selected Modem... Properties...Modem... and
moved the volume bar all the way to the left to OFF. But it has no effect
on the dial up noise. Seems there was a DOS command to silence the modem.
any help?

There should be a checkbox there to disable the modem speaker entirely.

Go to control panel and click on the Network Connection icon. Next right
click on the dial up connection icon and select properties. In the
properties window you will see a section marked 'Connect using' below will
be details of the dial up modem. Click the Configure button. The modem
configuration window will now open. Near the bottom of the window you will
see an option marked 'enable modem speaker' a tick mark should be in the box
to the left of this option. To disable the speaker simply remove the tick
from the box and press OK then exit from all the other windows. The modem
should now be silent.
If that doesn't work - which it should - then visit my web site
http://freespace.virgin.net/john.freelanceit/index.htm Click on the WinXPFaq
button and take a look at question 19 How do I silence my modem.

AOL installs its own modem control gui that
windows device settings do not change.

Start AOL without signing on, go to expert setup, choose
devices, select modem, edit, you will find the modem
speaker control there.

Thanks, That must be what the problem is. I don't think they know enough
about their computer to do that but I saved your message and will attempt
that change next time I visit them. Thanks again. The only other
possibility I found in Windows Help was that silencing the modem through
Device Manager only works for the Administrator Identity.

In Phone and Modem, Modems page, highlight the modem and take
Properties. On the Advanced page, in the 'Extra startup commands'
enter
L=0
to turn the speaker to lowest volume. Or M=0 to turn it off at all
times (but then you will not hear the dial process at all)
