Modem issue

The modem dials the number then I get what sounds like a
busy signal when doing the dialup, it beeps continuously.
But will not complete a connection, I switched phone
numbers, checked the phone connector wire, checked to see
if the modem "device" is working in the device manager,
but get nothing, even updated the manufacturer drivers.

Try calling a number you know isn't busy - like your mobile. Go Start>All
Programmes>Accessories and Phone Dialer if you have it - Hyperterminal if you
don't. Set up a connection to call your mobile or another land line you know
is not in use and see if that works.

If it doesn't, go back to Control Panel>Phone & MODEM and look in the
Properties for a Diagnostic or Query MODEM option - test the MODEM and post
back with the results.

Switched to a different modem yet? As suggested, run a query and see what
the response it. I have a feeling it's time for a new modem.

might be silly but did you put a 1-xxx-xxx-xxx? When i used a dialup it took
me 3 hours to figure out that you now need to put the 1 in.

Tried both same result "No Dialtone", so what do you
think, windows issue or time to get a modem. I do have a
cable connection, but on the occasion where the cable
goes out I like that alternative to use the dialup

Yep, thanks Rick, I just posted that, they are cheap
enough.

Don't get a cheap one. I have three cheap ones sitting on the other side of
the room. XP likes good modems. I am using an external USB Creative modem
and it works wonderfully.

NO dialtone is often a result of a fried modem due to a surge. Bet you
didn't have your moden line runing through a surge protector eh?
