Modem Installation Problem

Trying to install a USR 3PC5699 WinModem on a newer hardware system running
Win98se.

The modem worked just fine on the same hardware running WinXP. This is my
niece's PC who unfortunately has a Lexmark x73 all-in-one and they just
don't like to run on a lot of systems running WinXP.

Therefore I said I'd install Win98 which is supposedly much friendlier to
the Lexmark x73. At least that's what I've read in various usenet groups.

The hardware is a Soyo Dragon+ with an Athlon XP 1800+.

I'll be damned if I can get this modem to installed now that Win98 is the
OS. When I use the modem installation routine I don't detect the modem and
I select the inf file from a disk. When the inf file is selected and loaded
there in NO model numbers listed to select, nothing, nada.

The drivers I'm using were downloaded from the USR site today.

Any suggestions for getting the modem installed other than dumping the x73
POS and going back to WinXP?

Thanks....

First off...before you gpo any futher...confirm that the printer even
works properly with win98...if so...then tackle the modem problem

A few things to try:

put it in another pci slot

check the bios to see if the irq for the slot it's in is set to auto
or manual (then try the *other* possibility)

also...check in the bios to see if plug & play OS is enabled

Thanks for the reply.

I finally got the modem installed. I did it thru Device Manager by
selecting the "PCI Communications Device" (yellow !) and going the install
driver route from there. When it asked for the location of the driver files
I pointed it to the folder where the USR drivers reside and it installed.
I've never installed a modem that way before.

Next problem to tackle is that AO-Hell 8 is crashing the system
occasionally. I know, I know get rid of AOL, but it ain't my system!

I think it may have something to do with the very early version of IE that
is packed with the Win98 install CD. Tomorrow I'll upgrade the IE version,
painfully slow over dial-up, and hopefully that will solve that problem. I
should probably put a network card in temporarily and hookup to my 3MB
Internet connection.

Thanks again for your reply.

The Lex better work with Win98!!

As far as I have seen, the drivers for the modem-with-XP are loaded from the
XP-CD

You do appreciate that devices useing Win98 and WinXP use different drivers.

There are drivers for W98 and WinXP at 'Lexmark' site;
http://www.lexmark.co.uk/

'Drivers and Downloads'
'Printer Drivers'
Select model from drop-down menu
Operating System / Language

True, but I'm now loading Win98 NOT WinXP.

Yep, I have used the very latest drivers and I'm very well aware that
devices using Win9x and WinXP in 'most' cases use different drivers.

Using Google to search Usenet groups for "x73 and WinXP" problems turned up
hundreds of folks having issues with WinXP but not Win9x on the very same
machine.

I had the same problem with my granddaughter's PC using a different x73 and
it would not behave with WinXP. Solution, dumped the x73 and installed an
HP. Lexmark has problems.

Its possible the system has Phantom Drivers loaded - preventing the
correct drivers from working.

Restart Win98 in Safe Mode
[START] - [SETTINGS] - [CONTROL PANEL] - [SYSTEM]
Click into Device Manager
Check the following sections (if they exist for you):
Display - Should only have 1 item unless multi-moitor setup)
Modem - I think you have 2+ or wrong drivers
HID/Human Interface Device - may be more than you need here
Sound, Video and Game Controllers - Typically only about 4 items
Other Devices - You may have see "PCI Communications Device"

If you have some odd items, or dupes, or things like "CODEC" in SVG,
you'll likely need to rip them out and let MS Windows redetect these
items from a normal reboot.

**WARNING!!** IF you want to do that, be sure you have ALL drivers
available on CD / Floppy / HD. Skipping files CAN cause the BSoD. Be
carefull!

I've never installed a modem that way before.

When having a problem installing drivers for devices, this is always
one thing to check (yellow flagged unknown devices in Device Manager).
Windows won't redetect the device until it is removed from here. It
stops you being bugged for the driver if you don't have it yet can't
detach the device from your system.
