Modem install problem

Q

I am having the following problem with my modem setup which I am able to
work around but would like a more permanent solution

1. My modem is an external dial-up modem made by Swann (Australian)

2. It is not PnP but I can manually install it by telling WinXp not to try
and find it automatically.
If I allow it to search automatically it only finds a Rockwell PNP modem
driver
which comes with WinXp.
The problem with allowing this to be installed is that if the physical modem
is NOT powered on when I boot Windows it does not see it when I subsequently
try to dial up.

3. If however I manually install the Swann modem it works okay if I power it
up later and dial up. BUT, if whilst the physical modem is powered on, I
happen to need to restart windows, then windows REPLACES the Swann modem
with the Rockwell, and I am back where I started.

How can I prevent Windows from replacing my Swann installation with the
Rockwell ? (Apart from remembering to power off the modem when I need to
reboot)
Windows can be so annoying when it thinks it knows best what you want. !!

Can I turn off PNP for the modem ?
Can I completely remove the Rockwell drivers etc to prevent Windows from
finding it ?

Thanks,
Geoff

Hi,

Your original Swann modem drivers may not be XP
compatible.
I would suggest you to download the latest XP compatible
drivers from the modem maufacturer's website and save it
to a specific folder. Then go to device manager and click
the modem device, click the drivers tab and click update
drivers.

Hope it helps.

You could try letting XP install the Rockwell, then
install your Swann drivers as a separate device, and
disable the Rockwell in your Device Manager.
Hopefully XP will 'see' that the Rockwell is installed
(even tho its disabled) and leave you to use the Swann.
cheers.

Hi,
Yes that is correct. Win XP did not like the drivers and I had to tell
Windows to accept them anyway.
Unfortunately they were the latest available from the manufacturer (dated
Dec 2002). This was about one month ago. I will check again to see if there
is an update.
Thanks,
Geoff

Yes I have tried that, but unfortunately if the modem happens to be powered
on when I boot windows then windows insists on reinstalling the PNP Rockwell
and using that.
If I leave the Rockwell as installed but disabled, then windows insists on
uninstalling the Swann and re-enabling the Rockwell and using that instead.

If you see my reply to Peter's post I believe it is the drivers, and I will
need to keep trying to get an update.

Thanks,
Geoff
