In WinXP I have checked the box to display my modem when
connected down in the lower right of my display, but it
does not. I went to settings, control panel, network, left
clicked on my NetZero ISP, right clicked for properties
and checked the box to display when connected. It is still
checked, but I can't get the modem Icon when connected. Is
there a bug fix for this? Is there another procedure? I
need to be able to see connection speed and bytes in/out
like Windows 98 where this was a default.

Try unchecking the box, applying settings, then rechecking it. If you are on
a network, try telling your network connection to show the icon when
connected, and tell me if that shows the icon. If you're not on a network,
but have an enabled network card, tell me if you have the "cable is
disconnected" icon in the tray.

Stephen,

I'm not on a network. Yes, I have a cable not connected
icon in the tray for my ethernet I don't use. Tried
unchecking and rechecking, but it still won't work. Must
be an XP bug. I was warned XP was bad news.

Does this help at all?
I have AOL, so this might be slightly different in your case:
right click on blank area of notification area
select Properties and click the Customize button
Now, in my arrangement ot the Customize Notification window, there is an
icon with the AOL logo that has the legend "Connection Enabled" next to it.
So, I realized that the AOL icon in my notification area might be the source
of the modem information.

I then clicked on the icon in the Notification Area, and got a menu. My menu
had a choice called "System Information." This was a window with six tabs,
including one for "Status." I am not sure if this is what you are seeking,
as it doesn't seem to be very dynamic.

Windows XP takes some getting used to, but the increase in functionality is
substantial. Stay tuned to this forum to get a feel for all it can do.

Do you have Service Pack 1? Did this ever work correctly, or did this just
start. I'm gonna do soem more research and get back to you. I think this
problem can be solved, simply becuase most people don't have it.

Actually, Windows XP is the best OS yet. It's not bad news.

NetZero unchecks it. Guess they don't like you to know how fast you
connected. You can check the box while connected and it will appear. But
will uncheck when you connect the next time. You might want to ask NetZero
how to get it to stay checked. AOL also does this I believe.
