Modem does not respond to commands

I'm attempting to send faxes. I don't use this modem for a dial up
connection. I have DSL for the internet. My modem worked fine for internet
access and faxing prior to this problem. I moved to DSL access and the modem
wasn't used for a while.

I have tried two modems and two fax applications. One application hangs; the
other gives the error 'Modem does not respond to commands'. (I do not have
two modems simultaneously installed.)

The modems are a Creative Labs USB and a Lucent Win PCI.

Device Manager shows both modems as having installed correctly. I downloaded
the latest drivers. When queried in Device Manager both modems appear to
respond and function normally.

I've shared this conundrum with IT people are work, so far no easy answers.
Any ideas?

When you write, "When queried in Device Manager both modems appear to
respond" do you mean that you clicked the "Query modem" button on the
Diagnostics tab of the modem properties dialog?

Do you have HyperTerminal (Start > All Programs > Accessories >
Communications) installed? Can you access the modem there and cause it
to dial a number?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the modem(s)? I suppose
you did, if you have tried two, but don't have them installed
simultaneously.

What fax apps are you using? If you are using WinXP Fax Services, the
winmodem might not work, from what I've seen.

FAX Modem in PC

If your setting is like above, you did good job.

Next check point is;
CONTROL PANEL-Telephone and Modem option-Dial
information tab-Edit button-General tab, you must have your
location and select dialing method Tone or Pulse.

How is your setting ?

Hope this helps.
