Modem dialing sound in computer speakers

I have looked at the modem setup and the sound settings and don't see a way
to eliminate the dialing sound of the modem playing in the computer
speakers. This does not happen on Windows 2000 but does it in Windows XP.
Can this be stopped?

You need to get into the modem's properties to lower the
volume of the modem's speaker. Follow these steps:
1. Press the Windows key and then the Pause Break key.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager tab.
4. Double click on Modems. Your modem's name should
appear. Double click on this.
5. Click the Modem tab and the screen with the volume
slider should appear. Slide it to the position you want.
Click Ok, close the Device Manager window, click ok until
all windows have closed.
6. Restart your computer to reset your settings and your
problem should be solved.
