MOD File on Hard Disk Camera

I bought a hard disk camera to avoid tapes and other media. the camera is
great, but Movie Maker says it does not support the file type. It is MOD
file. Is there anyway I can get Movie Maker to support these files so that
I'm not bound to the software provided with the camera?
