mobo

I hope I can post in this group.Today I came across the Window XP Hardware
group so I posted a question about my mobo. To my surprise, it was taken down
within mnutes. I then posted to ask for the reason why, there was no answer
and this time it didnt even shown up. I would have thought at least if the OP
asked for a reason, it should be forth coming so that OP knows whats the
problem with the post.

Anywhere my question bout my mobo is: in my pc it has the cd rw attached and
it can recognise it in "my computer". Now I changed to dvd rw, it will not
recognise in 'my computer" nor during the POST. In the bios in its boot
sequence it has cd rom/c/floppy or other combination. But it does not have
the dvd rw option.

Does that means my old mobo does not have the availibity to recognise dvd
rw? If so, is there anything I can do to resolve it or do I have to change
the mobo? Thanks

Your post in WinXP Hardware is still there via your NNTP newsreader and

The web-based MS newsgroup server and access to same have been plagued by
problems since the 23rd, no doubt due to the extremely bad weather in the

The boot order in the BIOS isn't going to be too clever. It will refer
to optical drives as CD, when offering you the option for what to boot
from.

The BIOS should properly identify the optical drive, in the IDE interface
section. The BIOS queries the drive, and the drive should return its
identity string "Samsung xx-yy-1234 DVD" or whatever. It is even possible
in the BIOS, to disable the interface to the drive, such that the BIOS
does not consider it for booting purposes. (But an OS can still see it,
as I discovered to my annoyance in Linux. Disabling in the BIOS isn't
permanent, and will not protect a hard drive from having its MBR wiped out.)

I would work at the BIOS level first, and use the BIOS as a means of
verify the cabling, jumpers, and basic drive detection works, before
expecting a miracle in Windows. Windows cannot do anything more than
the BIOS can. Getting the identity string to show, proves there is a
small bit of communications going on with the new hardware. When
there is a significant background error rate, it is still possible
for enumeration to not complete when you get into Windows. Seeing
"Samsung xx-yy-1234 DVD" in the BIOS is an important first step.

For additional help, please include the motherboard make and model,
or if that is unknown, the computer identify, such as HP Pavillion 3456,
so we can figure out what hardware is present. If you are using
adapter dongles, PCI cards or the like with the drive, obviously
that would be valuable info as well. The drive should also be
identified, such as the make and model number, and whether the
new optical drive is SATA (thin cable) or IDE (ribbon cable).

On the ribbon cable, one drive can be "Master" and the other "Slave"
jumpered. Or both could be "Cable Select", as long as an 80 wire
cable is being used. If only a single drive is present on the
cable, it is supposed to be connected to the connector on the
end of the cable, leaving the middle connector empty. You fill the
end connector first, then the middle one.

Tried again just now and out of the blue, I can see my posts as well as the
latest postings. Many thanks and it leave me to work through all the
suggestions and hopefully I can sort it out. Regards
