Win XP Pro SP2

New one on me. Get this message (subject line) no matter which tool I try to
run. Noticed it when I tried to run defrag, then determined that all MMC
tools are affected. I have confirmed that all the *.msc files are present.
But get the same message when trying to run any of them. I cannot run System
Restore either. Otherwise, the system is running and performing well??? Yes
I am logged in as administrator. The only changes that could have possibly
been made is by virus or spyware scans.

Any ideas around "this pain in the neck" are deeply appreciated.

Try Start>Run type: sfc /scannow. You will probably need a WinXP +
SP2 Slipstreamed Disk. To do a Repair
Install will require the Disk as well.

Thanks Rich,
I had previously done the sfc /scannow before I posted. (My experience is
beyond desktop support). In fact I tried a few "fixes" in the Knowledge Base
(and here) before posting. I simply have never seen this prob and was hoping
that someone has. At this point I am willing to do a repair install, I just
thought there would be another higher level way. Any other ideas?

No . . . I found no resolution. BELIEVE me, I did a fair amount of research
and "suggested procedures" before performing a reinstall and restore from
backups. There may be a way to recover from this situation. However, in my
case the reinstall took way less time (and downtime) than additional
experimentation and looking for a guru who may have found a resolution. As
you can determine from my post date, most likely, no one here knows.
Nonetheless, should you find resolution, please post it here for others to
reference in the future.
