MMC 8.9.0.0 installation: Unhandled Exception Error number: 0x8002000B

Hi y'all

Card: AIW 8500DV
OS: Windows 98SE, all critical windows updates
installed
Cats: 4.7 - newer ones cause BSODs

Installation program (InstallShield) crashes
during setup with the following error:

"Unhandled Exception:
Error number: 0x8002000B
Description: Invalid Index
Setup will now terminate"

Installing MMC 8.9.0.0 crashes with this error. I
have installed WindowsMedia encoder, DAO, etc. I
have tried updates to InstallShield. No joy. I
have tried uninstalling drivers and software and
reinstalling. Older versions can install ok.

I searched ATI's support site and also
Installshields site. The error seems to be
InstallShield related, and they have similar error
messages list, just not that error.

Also, MANY people are having the SAME error with
ATI MMC and drivers:

http://www.devhardware.com/forums/archive/t-17617

Is there a solution to this? TIA.

PS. The ATI drivers SUCK! After installing the
drivers (really old ones) that came on the CD with
the card, upon the first reboot I got the dreaded
error that explorer.exe couldn't load and to
reinstall Windows!!! I recovered by reinstalling
Windows over itself, so perhaps something is
screwed now? Installed the newer drivers ok
though.

Erm, Win98 is no longer supported by MS. "All critical updates"
means nothing.

The first step to resolving your problems, assuming you want to
stay with ATI (btw I agree with your thoughts about their drivers)
is to use a modern OS. Win98SE does not qualify.

Right, so no-one can successfully use ATI hardware
or software under Windows 98SE? Hmmm...err...
ok... whatever. You do realize that MS still are
supporting Windows 98 until June 30, 2006.

I know "critical updates" means nothing to some.

After the crap I've had with both my ATI cards, I
seriously doubt I will ever buy another ATI. Next
card will most likely be an NVidia. I never had
issues with my old NVidia card. Both my ATI's have
sucked. My old Radeon 9000 drivers sucked even
when ATI still supported them.

MS is referring to extended support, which means only security
patches will be released. That's a far cry from saying they're
supporting Win98 as an operating system -- they aren't. If
incompatibilities or other problems exist with MMC or other
software (or hardware for that matter), MS isn't going to fix
them, and vendors such as ATI are under no obligation to fix
them either. That's why I suggested moving to a more recent
OS. It's the best (in fact it's the only) long-term solution.

I agree completely. Everything just seems to work with Nvidia,
while with ATI it's been fifteen years of waiting for fixes. It's
easy to tell which company puts proper salaries behind their
programmers and QA staff.

I have the same problem with a 9600 XT AIW under Windows 2000 with the
latest ATI Drivers/MMC. But version 8.8 MMC, from the original CD, loads
perfect and I have full functionality. Go Figure!

I guess people should file support requests at
ATI's website en mass, otherwise they won't get
the message.

Already requested ATI help and have been assisted, but no solutions yet!
We are working on it.

Yep, yep. I had the same problem and was scratching my head too.

If you look closly in the "Install Sheild" (how to section i think) web site.
There
are instructions there that say it is a problem with "windows installer." That
same page
will have a link to the file from microsft. I followed thos instructions and it
solved the problem.

Hope that helps.

PS... I think corrupted MCI files that the Install Sheild uses may have caused
the problem.

Hi Danny.

I searched consumer.installshield.com, but that
exact error number was not listed. I found info on
how to install the latest InstallShield engines,
but that didn't fix. What instructions did you
follow?

Hopefully this will be legible.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st: I followed these instructions.

How Do I Install the Windows Installer Engine on My Computer?
Document ID: Q108201
http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108201

They have a link to microsoft to download the installer "InstmsiA.exe".
Read that page and dowmload the microsoft "InstmsiA.exe" and the "Installer Cleanup Utility"
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=CEBBACD8-C094-4255-B702-DE3BB768148F

I ran the installs and then used the utility following the instructions.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2nd: I folled these instructions.

Update to the Latest InstallShield Installation Engines
Document ID: Q108322
http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108322

note: my pc had several engines installed so I did all the installled engines.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3rd: I installed the ATI and other related software.

Everything Installed without problems. The only bump I have run into is
that the "VideoSoap" feature is disabled. But thats not a install issue.

Hope that helps

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

PS: I dont know about this but take a look.

Thanks for that Danny. I had done all these setups, except the Windows
Installer clean-up tool. I had installed engines 7,8,9 too. Maybe a
clean install might be the ticket for me. :)

Clearing the %temo% folder is a important step to because crap from installs
that failed will still be in there.

A message for Danny Greaves, and anyone else
with the same problem i.e "greyed out" Videosoap
button.
If your like myself in useing an Athlon64 CPU
then you need MMC 9.06 or any 9.XX version to
get Videosoap functioning.
It is mentioned on ATIs' website somewhere.
Hope this helps.

BTW I have still found glitches in its functions
and am awaiting ATIs' response as to the cause.
