MMC 8.5 DVD - where did it go?

H

Helen Chevy

I noticed the link to ATI's DVD player is no longer active. Anyone have it?
Anyone unhappy with it and would like to suggest an alternative?

Thanks,

Helen

If you're talking about the DVD players (up to 7.7) that used to be
downloadable without the CD, you're waaaay out of date, Helen. But they're
still available under Previous Versions.

The link on the MMC 8.5 page now downloads a Wizard that requires checking
your Catalyst/MMC 8.x disk before downloading the new DVD player for you.
It's been that way most of this year, AFAICR.

And, even though you could download the old DVD player without CD
verification, you still needed a valid CD to install it.

I'm sure plenty of people here have plenty of alternatives, but most or all
of them will be more expensive than buying an ATi Catalyst Software CD, and
the new player works very well, with the single proviso that it won't work
with RPC1 firmware DVD drives. That, I'm annoyed about, although there are
ways to circumvent this protection.

Yes, I have copies of both

ATICDwiz-v2.exe (448Kb)

and the file it downloads
setp.exe (4,913Kb)

Do you want me to email them to you?

"Out of date" pretty much describes me. Now, let me see if I have this
right. I am trying to download the following:

http://www2.ati.com/drivers/atiCDwiz-v2.exe

but there is no file to this link. Assuming I can get it somehow, I can
install it since I have the CD. But you say, the player will not support
some firmware. My two recorders are in my configuration below. Either of
those qualify? I want to be able to copy anything (my business, I figure).
Thanks.

Happen I agree with you there - in part because PowerDVD install, runs and
plays DVDs without hassle.

But if my Radeon claimed to come with software for frying an egg, I would
not rest content with ATI until I had seen fry at least one egg.

OK, so there's way better ways of doing it, but...

Also, when you've obediently read half a dozen "Install notes" and
downloaded 7 or 8 different files and made careful notes on the correct
install order etc etc it would be kinda nice to see a result!

Hi Helen

are you in the UK?

you could try this link for the purchase of the full MMC8.1 CD including DVD
player v8.1 for less than £6

http://www.blisware.com/all_products_atiparts.htm

Gaz
Try it, yes, but prepare for the fact that it claims
"Multimedia Center 8.1 is the latest version of ATI’s award winning PC based
entertainment suite of applications"
Oh yes?

The "latest" MMC is 8.5, not 8.1. I bought this CD and all it gives you is a
CD to validate your updating download from ATI. - exactly the thing we can't
get to work!.

It does make installing Cat 3.1 very painless, provided you've done the
preparation of fully removing any other ATI stuff, but I notice there is now
a Cat 3.6 on ATI's site.

Now that blisware is selling them, I doubt there'll be any more freebies.

Hi Andre

I also emailed ATI about this but didn't get the same result as you,
unfortunately, so Blisware was the only option left for me.
I actually thought it was a good deal, considering US residents were paying
$10 plus P&P.
The important thing for me is that it works really well on my ageing AIW
Radeon 7200 - £6 well spent imo.

Hi Laurence

afaik there isn't a huge difference between 8.5 & 8.1 and I see people
reporting the Cat 3.6's can be installed over the 3.1's using the "bundled"
download. (though it doesn't seem to work for everyone)
I take your point, though & it's a shame you can't get the 8.5 download to
work, I must admit I havn't tried it myself - the 8.1 install is working
very well for me atm & I'm in full "if it ain't broke" mode.

The link's up again, anyway, Gaz. I'm hoping that now they have separate
AIW and VIVO sections for MMC they'll also post variants suitable for each
in each section when the next upgrade trundles around. Up to 7.7, MMC
respected my VIVO card, but the MMC 8.xs seem very iffy about it.
