Mixing RAM Memory

Jim

I'm using two 1 mb modules (A-Data PC2-6400) in my system. Is it possible to
add two 512 kB (Corsair PC3200) in the other 2 RAM slots without creating
problems?

TIA

PC3200 on a system designed purely for PC2? No
and electrically physically does not fit most likely.
hey nowadays the RAM for pC2-6400 is dirty cheap $29 for 2x1GB, even some
sale for 2x2 GB for $50. why bother trying

IIRC they fit, but ... all RAM will run at the speed ot the slowest
stick if it runs at all. I agree, RAM is so cheap right not it'd be a
lto better to buy more of the exact type so they'll all be matched &
perform well.

Many thanks to all who replied.

PC2 6400 is DDR2 RAM

PC3200 is DDR RAM

It is highly unlikely that your mobo can accommodate two different types of
RAM.

Your computer requires DDR2 RAM, and that is the type you must get if you
intend to increase the amount of RAM available..

Probably not. Mixing two different brands seldom works.

Sorry, that's not correct.

First, the speed of the RAM isn't actually its speed at all, but
rather the speed that it has been tested to run reliably at.

Second, the speed it runs at is the speed the motherboard is set to
run it at. If you have two different speeds of RAM and the motherboard
is set to run at the speed of the slower RAM, that's probably OK (from
a speed standpoint, not from a mixing of brands standpoint). But if
the motherboard is set to run at the speed of the faster RAM, the
slower RAM is likely to fail.

Possibly. However, you can't just buy any ole RAM module, stick it in,
and expect it to work.

It is absolutely essential that any new RAM module(s) be fully
compatible with both the motherboard and/or any other RAM module(s)
already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes jumper
switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for new RAM
configurations. Consult your motherboard's manual or the manufacturer's
web site for specific instructions and compatibility requirements.

If you cannot lay your hands upon the computer's manual and the
manufacturer doesn't provide a support web site, you can use these
utilities to help determine the correct type of RAM needed:

Also, Crucial Memory's web site (www.crucial.com) has a database to
help to find the right RAM for your specific make and model computer
and/or motherboard. (Incidentally, Crucial is the only company from
which I ever buy RAM. I've never been disappointed.)

Oh, and I've always considered Corsair to be of substandard quality;
you might want to think about spending a bit more money.

Memory already installed is DDR2.. the other memory to which the OP refers
is DDR. These two types are NOT interchangeable..

Yes, thanks. I noticed that after posting my message, when I saw your
earlier message. A difference in brands is likely to be an issue, but
the difference between DDR and DDR2 will certainly be one.
