Missing Windows System Files

I've run SFC and it reports I'm missing vital system files and/or files been
corrupted. As I don't have a XP disc (mine came OEM), I copied the I386
folder off the Recovery partition with -r -h -s attribute settings. Then I
tried two things:

1. I edited the registry (two places) for its 'sourcepath', pointing it to
my newly created I386 folder. Rebooted, ran SFC again. But it still asked me
for my XP CD.
2. I created a DVD (not CD) and put the entire 2gig folder on it. Reset my
registry. Rebooted. But the program STILL asks for my XP CD.
3. Assuming it must want a CD and not a DVD, I copied the I386 folder off
another, similar, computer, and put the disk in mine. Still no good.
4. Restored a System State from a few weeks ago when I reformatted my HD and
re-installed everything. It was clean. This stopped the urgent flash
warnings, but SFC still says some files are missing.

At this point, I don't know what to do. The Recovery I386 has ALL the
drivers, dlls, etc. that my computer might need, and yet SFC can't find the
missing files. Complicating matters, SFC isn't telling me What files are
missing/corrupted.

Hi

Which particular files are missing? You may find copies of those files in
the windows\system32\dllcache folder.

Last line "Complicating matters, SFC isn't telling me What files are

Is there any other utility out 'there' that can perform an integrity check
other than SFC?

Thanx, but I've seen this website. For Windows XP there is another registry
entry to change under WindowsNT/current version. I've tried various places to
put the full I386 folder (unhidden, non-system) -- even going so far as to
temporarily replace the Windows I386 folder with the full version. SFC STILL
asks me for the XP CD.

At this point, I've concluded that whatever SFC is looking for is NOT a
Windows XP file but something else from a program I loaded (like IE7). But
I've tried isolating all the .dlls pertaining to IE7, (re)copying them to
c:\windows\I386, registering all new additions, and even putting this list of
files into the dllcache manually. SFC STILL asks for the CD.

I give up.

Yes, the edit to the Windows NT branch is mentioned under #5 but, assuming
you got the path right, you must reboot before the new value is used. Did
you try Event Viewer to determine the file involved?

Sorry my replies are slow coming back.

I have no errors in any of my Event logs.

Drop it. OK? This isn't worth our time. I'm the type of guy that something
in my PC that isn't right just bugs me -- like a problem I can't solve. I'll
just take my losses and forget about it.

thanks anyway!

OK, dropped, except to say the Event Viewer entry would be Information
rather than Error or Warning.
