missing task bar and icons from desktop

When downloading adobe acrobat reader to download a form my computer locked
up. Now when I turn on, it goes to log in page then straight to a
screensaver with no task bar or icons. I can access all programmes by
Control, Alt, Delete and access via "New Task" option and browse. How can I
restore my desktop please?
