missing system restore tab

had to repair xp professional. after repair and many
errors about being unable to start certain services, i was
hoping that installing sp1 would give me a clean start.
downloading sp1 from the net hangs. installing it from cd
stops at 'creating system restore point'. On examining the
properties of My Computer, the system restore tab is not
available and a i get a message "the procedure entry point
RemoteAssistanceProcedreSystemRestore" could not be
located in the dynamic link library WINSTA.dll"
Tried removing and adding windows components without
success.
would appreciate help.

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Under the General tab, check "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services",
click "apply" and reboot.

Rstrui.exe is what loads your Restore points . Read this & see if you have
it set up correctly .

1. In My Computer, click the Tools menu -> Folder Options.
2. On the View tab, make sure to check the option "Hide extensions for known file types".
3. Click OK.
4. Click the Start menu -> Run. Type: " %windir%\inf " (Without quotation
marks) in the Open field. Click OK.
5. Locate and select the file " sr.inf ". Right-click it and then click Install.
