missing sound

I am trying to work out what file is missing.. most of the sounds work on my
pc.. I can get into msn chats and the beeps go off. but on the actual system
when I log on and off for instance nothing sounds.. I called compaq and they
say all the settings are correct.. there are also no sounds on msn
messenger.. I have two computers set up and I matched all the settings.. the
first one makes all the sounds.. does anyone have any idea,, you can email me
if you wish I am just about giving up
