Missing services!!!!!!

Hi, I can't seem to get any response to my problem.
Most of the services that should start automatically with Windows, don't.
Windows Audio, Workstation, WZC to name a few, there are about 10 in all.I
tried starting them manually but got error codes (error 5 for Windows
Firewall and error 1067 when I tried to start WZC. Sound Properties is
showing No Device and Adjustments are greyed out, Volume icon is missing fom
the tray, SysEvents says Pipeline is Invalid for each the of the services
that didn't start with Windows last boot-up.
I've hit a brick wall, any Ideas you guys.
TIA

Hi JJ,

So what were you doing with the system prior to this happening? Did you make
any system changes, install any software, open any suspect emails, tinker
(tweak) with anything?

System services don't just suddenly stop autostarting, something about your
system has been changed. Have you checked for any common dependency services
to see if all the ones not starting are all dependent on one common service
that is also not starting? If something like the RPC service is not loading,
then any service that is depending on it will also not load.

Hi Rick, to answer your Q, no tweaking at all. It's my laptop and I hadn't
used it for a week. I hadn't been online with it and it was working fine the
week before. I just fired it up and my media prog BPM complained that it
didn't like the Modem #0 Line Playback (emulated). This had happened before,
about a year ago. So I checked the Audio I/O from within the prog and changed
it back to the Realtek AC 97 that it normally is set to. That seemed to sort
it out. This time, I couldn't link with my desktop wirelessly, so after
checking a few things,I checked the services and found the prob I described
in last post.
I checked and most if not all the unstarted 'Auto' Services depend on RPC as
you said but it was up and running. I have the desktop and laptop services
set up identically, so I'll run through them and see if anything has been
altered for whatever reason.
I'll let you know,

JJ

Hi Rick, no changes in the settings of services apart from the Auto Start
services not starting on boot-up. The only thing I can think of that I've
changed is I've got rid of Norton Systemworks as the subs had run out and set
up AVG as my anti-virus. I deleted it and symantec thru Add/Delete in Control
Panel, then deleted the folders from Program Files.
Any ideas?

Norton Uninstallers aren't highly effective. You've likely got remnants
on the PC (Folder/Files/Services/Registry Keys). I can't say if that's
the cause, but I have a generalized document for Symantec/Norton
removal/cleanup that goes beyond the usual uninstaller approach.
You might want to try one of Symantec's "Cleanup" programs that
is supposed to nick the remnants. I've tested them, but found their
results to be lacking. Generally, I don't publicly distribute the file as
it's for customers only ( & I have gotten most weaned from Symantec).
Also the procedure varies if you need to leave any Symantec/Norton
products on the machine.

Basically, you've got entries left in the Non-Plug and Play category.
You need to tic "Show Hidden Devices" and scan the listing for any
entries starting with Sym.... and verify the provider string is Symantec.
Also there are considerable amounts of orphaned entries in the Registry.
That's risky even in experienced hands and something you wouldn't
want to undertake without a "Verified" System Image.
