Missing Regedit

Hi,
Just been trying to install some software from an executable downloaded off
the net. As soon as I double click it, I get a complaint that regedit cannot
be found. Sure enough if I try to manually start it, I get a similar error.

So I did a search for regedit, and can only find some help files. I would
have expected to find regedit.exe right? But no sign of it.

I dont know if its relevant but I had an "incident" (some sort of virus) a
couple of weeks back which rendered Norton Internet Secuiity Professional
2004 inoperative and I had to re-install it. All seemed ok after that, or so
I thought...

My question is - How do I re install regedit?

Over to you guys

I think the only way to fix that is to reinstall the os because regedit
should be in 5 locations on the c drive i dont think it can be reinstalled
and re-registered by it self

Clean install and don't install Norton again. TrendMicro has a nice
suite as does v-com.com

I didn't want the bother of a complete re-install. My XP CD is pre SP2. Cant
I do a repair using the original CD?

Yes, but you would have to slipstream SP2 with the XP version you have
on to a new CD and you would run the risk of the virus that nuked your
regedit nuking it again. You would also still have Norton on your
machine which isn't easy to remove.

So, first you have to learn how to slipstream. How long will that take.

Then you have to muck around and make sure the virus that nuked your
regedit doesn't nuke it again.

You will have to spend hours and hours removing all vestiges of Norton.

I think a clean install is quicker and surer. YMMV.

First of all, when you searched for regedit, did you look in hidden and system
files?

Second, of all, try start --> run --> sfc /scannow [enter]

If system file checker (sfc) doesn't fix it, you still may able to manually copy it
from your XP CD. I'm not a place where I can check this out right now, but I'm not
convinced that regedit has to to be "installed" or "re-registered." In particular,
MVP Doug Knox has a little script to create copies of regedit, taskman, and msconfig
(for use if/when a virus blocks execution of one or more of these utilities).
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_emerutils.htm If a file named
"Copy_of_Regedit.com" will do the trick, it seems to me that if you can find a copy
of regedit.exe, all you have to do is put it in the directory where it belongs --
which I think is in the %systemroot% directory (C:\Windows or C:\WINNT)

Take a search through your XP CD, keeping in mind that you may find it under the
name regedit._xe or the like and have to "expand" it.

search for file called regedit.com.

if there delete it. it interfers with regedit.exe

Even with hidden and system files selected, there is no sign of it

I tried sfc / scannow. Took ages to run and kept asking for the XP CD to
"copy files to DLL Cache". I put the CD in the drive - After 20 mins of
pressing retry, I get the blue bar right across. Now what?

Legit software does not ask for regedit. However, if your pc is running
a virus or has virus damage then that may be the reason.

sfc /scannow looks in the DLL cache to find system files that it needs
to replace system files that have become damaged. If, however, the DLL
cache itself has become corrupted, sfc asks for the install CD. It
shouldn't "take ages" or require you to continually press "retry." I
don't know what you mean by "the blue bar right across the screen" but
it doesn't sound good.

It seems to me as if you have far more serious problems than a missing
regedit. I join the recommendations for a clean install.

As a last resort, and if your system really is otherwise running OK, put
your WinXP CD in the drive; when it starts up, click "Browse This CD;"
navigate to the I386 folder; and copy regedit.exe from the CD to
C:\Windows or C:\WinNT (whichever one you have). It isn't even
compressed on the CD.

You also should boot into safe mode and do a thorough scan for viruses
and other malware.

Hi Lem,

Well I copied regedit from my CD to C:/windows. Now regedit works. Also my
software installed ok which is the hitch that prompted all this. So thanks a
lot.

However, sfc /scannow doesnt see to be working. What actually happens when I
start it is a dialog box comes up after a few seconds advising that files are
needed for Windows to run properly. They need to be copied to the DLL cache.
I am asked for my XP CD, which I insert. If I click at this point the
tempting "more info" button, it tells me of two possible reasons for the
problem (but it hasn't otherwise said there is a problem - is it confused?)

Anyway the reasons given are:

1) I have inserted the wrong CD
2) The CD ROM drive is not functioning

If I click retry, the blue progress bar moves a bit more, before repeating
the request to insert the CD

A point occurs now to me - could it be complaining because I have installed
SP2 since the original install? Anyway the system is otherwise ok so I am not
stuck. It would be nice to clear this snag if poss.

There's a little "Circular Logic" going on here. When XP is first installed
it sets a Registry Key CDInstall to a value of 1. This tells XP that the
source point (i386) is on a CD-ROM. When you apply SP2 to the PC
it's ServicePackFiles supersedes the i386 folder as the reference point
for getting XP modules. However, the Registry Key for CDInstall still
tells XP to "Ask for the CD-ROM".
Here's a background article that helps explain SFC/WFP.
