missing outlook.pst can't load outlook

i made the mistake apparently of trying to overwrite an Outlook 2007
Outlook.pst file with the one i was bringing over from Outlook 2003 (I think
it was '03). I'd moved that file in this way before (albeit between the same
version). 2007 does not recognize the replaced file as a .pst file and now
won't open at all; and it doesn't automatically offer to rebuild a new .pst
file either. So how do I get Outlook running again, and how do I open my old
mail?

thanks,

Overwriting a pst can corrupt it, and or, the profile.
It is not neccessary to store the pst in the default OL location.

With OL closed use the mail applet to add a new data file, set it as the
default and remove your 'old' data file.
Then copy your origonal old data file to eg My Documents; within OL,
File>Open>Data File......browse to its location.

i thought that applet was for the 32 bit vista only...? at any rate it didn't
work...however, i did manage to locate an article on daniweb that described
how to edit the registry (never done that before...;) ) to clear the previous
profile (fortunately there was no data anyway) and OL loaded fine and asked
me to create a new profile, so that's cool. Next problem: i got the 'this is
not a .pst file' message when I went to open the older outlook.pst
file...after some thinking i realized that nero 6 had warned me about
'compatibility issues' with Windows XP when i went to back up the old data
file...i thought because it burned anyway that i was ok, but i guess not. I
went back to that machine his eve and took a portable hard drive with me - it
worked fine this time! :)

thanks for your assistance!
