When I try to open Outlook 2007 I get an error message, "Cannot open your
default e-mail folders. The fileC:\Users\........\Outlook.pst is not a
personal folders file." Outlook shuts down after closing this error message,
I am using Vista. What can I do to correct this?

I don't think I did anything to cause it. I have tried using the install
disk repair option after receiving this error and that did not help. Do I
have to uninstall to get my e-mail working again, and will that lose all my
contacts?

The message means the end user either corrupted the Outlook data file or
disrupted the connection between the Outlook profile and its data file, so
there is more to your story. How to fix this depends on what caused it.
Make sure your data file has not become read only. Try running the Inbox
Repair Tool on your data file:
