Missing or Corrupted file

D

D.K.

Hi! I'm very new to this so if I'm in the wrong newsgroup sorry.

My son's computer won't boot. He got an error message that said his
\windows\system32\config\system file was missing or corrupted.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I got this after trying to use the Files and Settings
Transfer Wizard to transition from an XP upgrade to a
fresh XP installation. The file was present, but somehow
corrupted.

Eventually, I reformatted and reinstalled XP. Since I was
still in the installation phase of getting my computer
going, it was a minor inconvenience. Your son's situation
is very different. He should get relief by reinstalling
XP over his existing system - it will keep his data and
most settings intact - but I suspect he will get the same
message the next time he reboots. He would be wise to
back up all the files he needs and then reformat.
