missing or corrupt <windows root>\system32\hal.dll file

Scott

I am running Windows XP Home Edition. While using
Internet Explorer, I received the "Unexpected error,
Explorer is shutting down" message. Now, after restarting
my computer via the Start button...Restart, I received the
following:

"Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\hal.dll"

The help articles all seem to indicate this problem
occurrs after upgrading to Windows XP and involves the
Boot.ini file. Since my system started with Windows XP,
this does not help solve my problem. Any advise on how to
cortrect this problem would be appreciated.

You'll probably need to expand the file from the CD.
Type this command:
expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ (substitute "d" for the letter of your CD drive)
c:\windows\system32\hal.dll.
Substitute d: for the drive letter of your CD.
Once the file is expanded exit the Recovery Console and restart the
computer.
