Missing Or Corrupt System Font?

C

Confused

I own 2 computers. One seems to be just fine, but the
other sometimes displays illegible text, particularly in
MS Internet Explorer. My guess is that I'm either missing
a system font or a font has become corrupt and Windows XP
is substituting a font. How do I restore the system fonts?
Can this be done from the installation disk or are the
fonts available online somewhere that I can download them
and re-install them manually? Thank you.

undoubtly that someone will help you but then again
stranger thing can happen >>> good luck

Yes, I have 2 licenses. When the Microsoft Police knock on
my door I will gladly produce the documentation proving I
have done everything legally, provided they have a valid
search warrant. Meanwhile, any help with my font question
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Here are a few things to try:

Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" [Enter]. Note that there is a space
between "sfc" and "/scannow". This will run the System File Checker.

And here's information from MVP Kelly Theriot:

"Make a work folder - say C:\Tempfont. Put the CD in the drive and exit
from the auto-run.

Start - Run - CMD.EXE and in that give the letter of the CD drive (say
Z:) - so
Z:
CD i386
EXPAND *.TT_ C:\TEMPFONT
EXPAND *.FO_ C:\TEMPFONT
C:
CD \TEMPFONT
REN *.TT_ *.TTF
REN *.FO_ *.FON
EXIT

That will extract all 298 fonts to C:\TEMPFONT. You can then go to the
Fonts folder, Browse to C:\Tempfont, and select the ones you need.
Check the 'Copy to fonts folder' box before OK. Once you are sure you
have everything you need, you can delete the work folder."

You did not say why you had lost your fonts or what you
had done that caused it. If you had run McAfee Quickclean
Lite then it removes a vital registry entry such that,
even after re-installing your fonts, they will not be
there the next time you restart your computer! IF this is
the case you need to fix the registry. Using Regedit.exe
(found in Windows dir) open up
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\softward\Microsoft\windowsNT\currentVers
ion\ and via EDIT/NEW/KEY add the missing 'Fonts' entry.
Use RegEdit with care! Please let us know what happens.

Great info, Ian. But what happens after adding the subkey? What steps are
needed to feed the Font folder? And yes, most of these posts pertain to
McAfee.
