Missing Ntoskernel.exe

After running a check of my C drive on Windows XP Home I shut down my PC.
When I started it back up again I received the message that Windows could
not start because "Ntoskernel.exe was missing or corrupt, please replace
this file". I shut down the PC and started it up again and windows started
up normally.

Do I need to replace this file and if so, how do I do it? I was going to
run SFC, but I was afraid that it would replace all of my driver files etc.
Any advice on what to do would really be appreciated!

Hi,

Running sfc will do no harm, and it may help. See this article on booting
problems with ntoskrnl.exe:
