16-Sep-06 / No Network traffic monitor icon

How can I get the Network traffic monitor icon back in system tray?

After the HD went south, repartitioned/reformated re-installed Win XP Pro SP2
and tried restore some of my old settings. Things back to reasonable state now
except I found RAM went bad too - down from 224 to 97 MB. Win XP and 3
memory testers report RAM "OK" but left only 95 - 97 MB. Buy new when can.

All works OK - except a bit slow and hanging some time in email or when multi-
tasking or too many windows open. Response to left or right mouse-clicks,
usually
slow. Do have a lot of files in 2 of 3 partitions (only 40 GB HD, tho').

It's not the classic case of icons disappearing from sys tray / notification
area. It's just this one. Sometimes it's there, sometimes not. Where does it
come from, anyway? What has to be set up to show it for sure? It's not in
right-
click taskbar\properties\Hide...\Customize either.

I used the network wizard couple, 3 times already. There's a small (8-port)
hub
downstairs I connect to. That goes to a small 1 or 2-port router to the line.
Internet & Network access OK, as before.

Anyone have this problem before? I feel blind w/o that flashing monitors icon.
Is there an alternative way to monitor, w/ min resources?

Appreciate any advice.

Ted... :(

Right click on "My Network Places" and choose properties
Right click on the network connection you want to show and choose properties

At the bottom of the property page, you will find a checkbox called "Show
icon in taskbar when connected", ensure this is checked

Close all property pages by clicking the OK button, and your icon should
appear

Right on the money with that one, Edwin! Thanx mucho.

I could have sworn I clicked on that before to check properties and didn't
see
any connection - though one existed OK in practice. Because I didn't see the
connection, I thought I'd done something wrong during the setup.

Maybe I "left-clicked" and then right-clicked on something that opened. I'll
have
to retrace some steps here to verify what actually happened. I know I'm old
and
dumb - but thought not that far gone yet!

In fact, I'd earlier placed 'My Computer' as well as 'Mshome' links on
DeskTop
also and couldn't get anywhere via those two either. BTW, I'd thought the
connection would also normally show up in My Computer - but it does not, now.

Anyhow, I wonder how that icon was there OK in the beginning; and I also
wonder
why such an important little number isn't there always by default. It's
easily enough removable but, frankly, I'd be blind without it. Can't think of
any 'really good' reason why anyone would want to hide it, either.

BTW, doesn't look like that's Louise's problem. According to her post, she
already
ran thru that routine - which is how I revived my failing memory on the
issue and
followed up immediately thereafter.

Anyhow, appreciate the knock to the old cockpit. Probably be here for the
next
6 weeks looking for that icon otherwise.

Triple thanx for that one.
