I've seen variations of this in various place but no fix...

I just applied SP2 and everything seems to work fine. But... I cannot see my
SMC network interface in "Network Connections" and it is also missing in the
Hardware Device Manager. As I said everything works fine (I can access my
Linux gateway system and browse the web - so DHCP client is working).

However I need to give this system a static IP address and with no access to
the interface from Windows I am well and truely stuffed!!!

Anyone got any suggestions (apart from going back to SP1).

JohnK,

I have see the same thing on numerous computers. The only
way I have found to rectifiy it is to uninstall SP2.

Ignore any warnings that stuff might not work if you
uninstall. What are you going to do - accept that Media
Player may not work, or not have access to your Network
Connections? I opt for network connections since this is
my business. I recommend that people uninstall SP2 if
this problem exists.

I have researched and tried every single related KB
article meticulously to no avail. Uninstalling SP2 is the
only solution I am able to find. Use Control Panel ->
Add/Remove program to do this.

I have read other similar postings here and in the wild
over the past few weeks. Many people re-install Windows
XP entirely when they have problems. This is not
necessary.

I have confidence that Microsoft will recognize this issue
and find a solution. Until then, keep your computer doing
what you need it to do, and uninstall SP2 if you have this
problem.

Initially, I was thinking this might be isolated to
systems with Intel Pro100/VE, but you have an SMC NIC.
This adds some interest and depth to the issue.

Please also look for the following tandem issues, and
please post if you see the same. I have noticed that if
you have this problem, you should also see these:

1) Start -> Run -> MSINFO32 (and hit enter)
If your system "Cannot Collect Information," then you
are having the same problem I have noticed.
2) Application Event log error. Event ID: 4609, Source:
EventSystem, Categrory (50), Message, "The COM+ Event
System detected a bad return code during its internal
processing. HRESULT was 80070005 from line 44 of
d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to
report this error."

Again, I have seen this on numerous computers. It is not
isolated to a configuration issue.

Any solutions that I find will be posted to this forum.
