I ran Norton's Windoctor program and it identified the following as missing
along with other associated files through v2.0.50727\vbc.exe:

"C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\AppLaunch.exe" cannot access
a necessary file, "msvcr80.dll." I use DSL and do not have other computers
networked. I hope this was enough information for you.

Do I need to reinstall XP Home or was this a download update? Other actions
I should take? Thanks, Rick

To begin with, I would not use WinDoctor in XP. Aside from WinDoctor's
report are you having any problems with XP or with any of your programs?
If not, don't worry about this. If yes, go to Microsoft downloads and
download/reinstall .Net 2.0. You may need to uninstall it first from
Add/Remove Programs. .Net Framework is used to build many third-party
programs. It isn't part of XP.

If the system is working well - as you said in your other reply - leave
things alone. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a good motto in
computing.

You don't need a "WinDoctor" equivalent in XP. I did use WinDoctor a lot
in Win98/ME systems and it was helpful. It isn't necessary in XP if you
do normal maintenance. And there is never any need to "optimize" your
registry in XP.

Thanks for your time and insight. It's now uninstalled. Like you, I used it
routinely in win98. Registry cleaners have always been alarming to me
especially after reading a number of articles regarding the problems they can
cause. Thanks again, Rick
