Sometime recently the "turn off computer" button disappeared from my Start Menu in Win XP Pro. Have to go through the "Log Off" button to be able to shut down the computer. I'd like my button back. I've searched all over the microsoft site for an answer, tried google, etc. I can't be the only person in the world who's lost this button but it seems like it at this point. Somebody PLEASE help me restore this thing!

I'm clueless but have one question and one possible
solution;
1 - When did you lose it?
2 - If it was very recently then perform a system
restore, it's under accessories in system tools, you can
go back to a restore point past the date you think this
issue occurred. The only thing to keep in mind is, if you
installed any new programs between now and then you'll
lose them and have to reinstall them, you will lose no
data.

Hi Donna,

Give this a try:

Go to Start>Run and key in gpedit.msc then click on OK or hit ENTER. In the
Group Policy window, under User Configuration in left-hand pane,
double-click on Administrative Templates if not already expanded to show the
items beneath. Now click on Start Menu and Taskbar, and in the right-hand
pane scroll to locate "Remove and disable the Turn Off Computer" button",
right-click on this item and select Properties. Under the Setting tab, click
in the radio button beside either "Not Configured" or "Disabled" and click
on Apply then OK. Close the Group Policy window. If the Turn Off Computer
button is not now automatically displayed in the Start Menu and you are
using the WINXP Start Menu option, right-click in the blue title bar where
it displays the Username, select Properties then just click on OK.....see if
the Turn Off Computer button is now displayed.

But is gpedit.msc in Home edition I thought not, I know
it's in Pro?

Patti

I tried it TWICE - rebooting the computer after each try. No change. The "Not Configured" was already checked so I changed to "Disabled" to see if that helped. No luck there either. I'm just at my wits end here.

Donna wrote about Windows XP Pro, so it should work just fine. In Home
edition it is also available to disable that option but not using
gpedit.msc. One should use registry editor and add dword value
"NoClose"="1" in registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

i would say someone has used a tweking program on your
computer and disabled it.
power tools for windows has the option to disable many
things in windows

Sorry but that is NOT the case. No one but my husband & I use the computer & I do not even know what "power tools" are - much less having used them.

Patti, that helps me half way ;-)
I want to change "Turn Off Computer " to "Shutdown" on both the Start menu
and the Welcom screen. I have been a professional programmer for over 30 years and ... Turn off Computer just feels wimpy to me.

Thanks in advance,
IanO
