Missing Modem Options in the Internet Connection Wizard!!!

Jeff

My modem is a Creative Modem Blaster V.92 PCI DI5633.
I am posting again because my original post is buried and
hopefully I can get some fresh ideas to correct my
problem. I am posting in the General box, because it
appears to get the most traffic. Please suggest a better
category and I will repost in it. I know I can't be the
first one this has happened too.
I have just upgraded my PC from Win2K Pro, with Win XP
Pro. Everything worked fine in Win2K Pro. I was given an
upgrade CD from my new college. After I completed the
upgrade to XP, everything worked fine except the modem
wouldn't work properly. I reinstalled the modem with no
affect. Something is wrong with the Internet connection
wizard. I tried to hook up the modem to the internet via
the Internet Connection Wizard. The problem is when I get
to the screen that asks:
How do you want to connect to the Internet?
I found that the options
- Connect using a dialup modem
and
- Connect using a broadband connection that requires a
username and password are faded out, basically that are
not an option any more.
The only one that is not faded out is
- Connect using a broadband connection that is always on.
and that is not the one I'm after.
What I have tried so far:
1. Ran the XP modem trouble shooter. Didn't work.
2. I found a possible fix that didn't work for me at
Microsoft.com article # Q320558.
a. I followed the directions from Q320558 and
315341. Didn't Work.
3. Downloaded the most up to date XP Driver from
Creative.com and uninstalled my present driver and
installed the new one. Didn't Work.
4. Physically Removed the Modem. Restarted the system.
Shut down the system. Reinstalled the modem. Didn't work.
5. Verified the Connection Wizards Properties are set
properly.
"Target" should be "%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe
netshell.dll,StartNCW" and the "Start in" should be "%
HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%". Double-check the Security
permissions. Everything was set correctly. Didn't work.

Does anyone have better suggestions or a work around for
fixing this problem?
Thanks in advance.
Jeff

You college may have modified the install disk. Since only a
Broadband connection is available, they may have made the
change to prevent users from connecting with a modem and
use the college's Ethernet wired network.
For security reasons, they want all traffic to flow through their
Servers to prevent viruses and spyware from entering their
network.
Check Control Panel's "Phone and Modem Options" to
ensure the modem is installed. I believe there is still a query
modem option to have it run a self-test.

Great idea. Glad it was wrong. Ended up having to do
with not having SP1. I installed SP1 and walla.
Everything is thumbs up! My college is an online
university. They depend on students using their own
provider. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Jeff,

For the next time:

Dial-Up Modem or PPPoE is Unavailable (Line 87)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
