Missing LAN icon

T

Tom Johnson

I work in a Netware environment where I have
successfully created a push that will install, but not
select, the Client for MS Networks and File & Print
Sharing for MS Networks. These are elements needed for
our XP workstations to successfully communicate with our
SUS servers. The problem is that after the push runs, the
LAN icon under the properties of My Network Places
disappears. I know all the protocols and services still
exist, due to the fact that I can connect to our network
and the workstation receives patches from the SUS server.

We do not use any type of group policy, so the push
contains only registry modifications. Is there a registry
setting that hides the LAN icon located in the properties
of Mu Network Places? I have only discovered the registry
setting that determines if the LAN icon appers in the
system tray. Any advice on this topic would be greatly
appreciated.

I think it is more likely that you have corrupted the settings for that
connection. Why are you editing the registry directly? The INetCfg
interface is probably what you want.

I thought INetCfg was just for Netware servers. Our
current loadsets are missing the following elements needed
for SUS to work:

The Client for MS Networks
File and Print Sharing for MS Networks
Automatic Updates Service is set to Disabled

My push installs the missing protocol and service. It
also sets the AU service to Automatic and configures AU to
look for updates on our SUS servers. I do not know of any
other way to make these changes other that directly
modifying the registry. We do not use local or group
policies. Thanks for your feedback.

No INetcfg and friends have nothing to do with Netware servers. I've never
done what you are describing but I'm pretty sure that INetCfg is the place
to start. In fact if all you want to do is install the components and not
change the bindings then the SetupDI* apis might be the place to go.

Your registry entry doesn't seem to be working correct hence the missing
icon. Plus it will break the second the internal config story for network
config changes.
