Missing important dll file and boot.ini file

I installed a program on my computer late yesterday that was supposed to
allow me to play a game (so said a friend). Anyway, I installed it, and then
an error message appeared, saying that a dll file was missing and a program
couldn't start. So closed the message and restarted the computer. Then as I
booted it it gave me 3 different choices:Windows XP Professional
Windows XP Professional (Orginal)
OS for new boot screen (I have no idea what that
is)

I then choose orginal winxp and started login. A different login appeared
(a window instead of the normal login). I logged on and the error message
appeared again. So I tried to show my Mum what happened and as it tried to
boot, this happened:

1. The normal Acer screen showed
2. A screen appeared saying "Invalid Boot File- BOOT.ini"
3. Then another screen appeared saying " Windows cannot boot as this file is
missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install this file

It then shuts down my computer and does the same thing again. Although I
try to enter safe mode the same messages appear again and again. I then
downloaded the dll file from www.dll-files.com and put it on a usb drive. I
then plugged it in to my laptop yet it wouldn't let me even enter safe mode.
I have about 3 important assignments my laptop and I need then ASAP. Please
help thanks
