Missing icons

I use Xp home SP2.

I recently scanned a document and saved to desktop. as i did the save all
the desktop icons disappeared, including the scanned dociment.

The all reside in the desktop folder inc' the scanned doc. My
screen(desktop) shows XP's lovely sky and countyside and nothing else. The
screen is no longer interactive. I have no icons, mouse click left or right
or both does nothing.

I have opened the desktop folder and tried to drag & drop, copy and paste
the icons from the folder to the desktop, no go. when the icon gets to the
desktop it changes to a stop sign. I have tried everything I know and cannot
put the icons on my desktop.
My Pc seems perfectly ok in every respect.

Any suggestions please.......

Hi Brian

You can't copy items found in the User\Desktop folder back onto the desktop
because they're already in your folder/on the desktop. So If you right click
on the Desktop you don't get a menu? I'd say if you could - and could get
into "Arrange icons by..." you could see if your "hide desktop icons" has
been check marked (activated).
