I have properties checked to " always show" icon and it is in the past items
area and not current items area.

Depends on your hardware. Your XP should / SHOULD install the drivers
you NEED.

What you are describing is a driver issue.

My OLD jump drive put an icon in my taskbar. If the icon didn't tell
me, "It's now ok to remove the device." I couldn't pull it out.

The PROPER way to use the jump drive is that-- if it's lit, leave it
alone. If it's NOT lit, you can remove it.

With my NEW jump drive, there's no icon, because the drive and driver
match, and I don't need any warnings.

If the jump drive is LIT, leave it alone. If the jump drive is NOT
lit, you can safely remove it.

thats what i figured. but i used to have the icon in the task bar, and a
couple of weeks ago it just dissappered.
what would happen if i unplug a usb device (mostly mp3 players in this
case) without having the icon to terminate the connection?
