Even when Quick Launch toolbar is displayed, I can no longer find this very
useful icon. How can I find / restore it? Must I re-install Windows XP?

Create a text file in Notepad as follows:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Save it as Show Desktop.scf then drag it to the Quick launch bar.
Or just click on this link:

Restore/Add Show Desktop to Quick Launch (Line 61)

Also note that you can show the desktop with a keyboard shortcut: the
combination of the Windows key + D or the Windows key + M.

Ken, this is very helpful, but I've had to resort to it several times (today
being the most recent). What is wrong with WinXP that this keeps
happening??? Incidentally it happens to me with WinXP Home on my personal
laptop and WinXP PRo on my work ThinkPad. Thanks!

I'm glad it's helpful. You keep losing the Quick Launch shortcut? I don't
know why. I've never run into that kind of recurrence of the problem.
