Missing History Folder Entries

For reasons unknown to me, Internet Explorer 6 has stopped
accumulating entries in the History folder---not even the
current session's visits show. To the best of my
knowledge, I have not changed any pertinent configuration
settings.

Are there any configuration settings that could cause this
behavior? If not, does anyone have suggestions for trouble-
shooting the problem?

Hi Peter

I have the same problem suddenly and suspect the last
windows update might have done something. Someone replied
to my message (scroll through about 4-5 pages and look for
a message from me on the same problem), but his fix didn't
work for me.

cheers

Eve

I tend to agree, Eve, since I recently applied a number of
Windows Updates.

Sigh! Doesn't leave one with much recourse, does it?

I have the same problem and link it to a Windows Update. At the exact same
time, my Outlook Express quit functioning (it appears to have made all my
e-mail disappear, leaving nothing behind but corrupt .dbx folders. Note
also that the icons in the explorer temp folder do not display correctly.
A .jpg viewed in that folder is a blank icon; if you copy it to another
folder, it displays the correct .jpg icon. Go figure. If anyone knows
what the ID of that update was, please post it. Also, are we all using
McAfee?

Solved both problems. Solution was to un-check the box for Active-X and
Java classes in Applet filters in McAfee's V-shield. Then log off and log
back on (actually, logged off as one admin and on as another (different
admin acct) and that seemed to do the trick. I'm sure something in the 19
April Microsoft update caused the problem but changing the McAfee settings
solved it.

I am not running McAfee. I am running Norton. I have been
thru the settings and have not located anything similar to
the settings mentioned regarding McAfee. The history just
stopped being saved. Are any of the settings inside IE 6
itself suspect at causing this type of problem?? I have
read an earlier post where a user has gone as far as
formating the hard drive and rebuilding their system to no
avail without getting history to work. Although, they did
not mention the use of McAfee. I dislike the kneejerk
reaction to just delete all of the internet related
directories and see if that corrects the problem (although
I have performed some of this). This does not address a
solution to the problem. I have also read that some have
went back to IE 5 and have deleted temp, history and the
temporary internet files directories and the history is
still not being tracked. This does point more
specifically to a problem with an update that has altered
registry settings or one of the shared components that is
not rolled back with an install of an earlier version. I
installed IE 6 on 2004-02-07. All patches and updates
available at the time and since have been installed. An
examination of the history shows that the last history was
captured on 2004-04-17 12:27PM. Surfing did continue
during the same session and the history was not updated.
This is on a Windows 98 SE system w/all updates, 128 mb
memory, 80GB hard drive (4 20GB partitions)
