Missing Folders View in Windows Explorer

When I open windows explorer, I cannot see anything on the
left pane. Is is just a grey box with a small square with
an X in it to close the "folders" view. It appears there
is a missing link because I can turn it off and on in the
toolbar but nothing appears. I can see all the details on
the right pane as normal. Any suggestions?
