Missing Files

Phil

I am pulling my hair out on this one or what I have left.

I downloaded some (50) files (music, and I don't live in the US and yes
it is legal where I live so please don't get into a flame fest on this)
and they show as being in a shared folder but when I go to the folder
they are not there.

The funny thing is I was able to setup a play list etc. after I
downloaded them. I can play them no problem no matter what player I use.

I thought there first was a problem with the program itself, Piolet and
uninstalled it and reinstalled it. After it was uninstalled and the
folder where the files were suppose to be I was still able to play the
songs. I reinstalled the program and still can play the songs, yet there
is nothing in the folder.

I do a search of the HD and it yields nothing. It shows the songs as not
on my HD.

When I play them in Windows media Player it shows the songs and if I
right click on a song and scroll to the bottom open file location I get
this:
C:\Program Files\Piolet\My Shared Folder refers to a location that is
unavailable.

No kidding Sherlock as I deleted this folder and it is gone, yet any of
the media programs still play what isn't there. If I open up the
playlist it is a 2.85KB file yet the music adds up to 480 megs. Opening
the playlist in textpad shows the music stored in C:\Program
Files\Piolet\My Shared Folder\ .

I have done a search on Google and found this problem happens on
upgrades of XP to Vista but this isn't the case. This is a new computer
with Vista pre installed.

I have further emptied all my temp files, thumbnail files etc and nothing

So the question is where are these files?

Thanks
Phil

Any program that tries to write to \Program Files or a subdirectory thereof
is virtualized to a different folder, invisibly.

Look in C:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Local\Virtual Store\Program Files
and therein you will find the application folder that has been virtualized
and there you will find your files.

Thank you that did it.

Now the question I have is why they don't show up when does a search of
the HD using the search feature in Vista?

Remember that by default, search neither searches nor indexes any folder
marked as hidden or system. You'd probably either need to explicitly
include them in the search or use the advanced search features to look in
hidden/system folders.
