missing files & folders

Question:

I have a windows 2000 server that acts as a domain controller, file server,
DNS, DCHP.

There is a share on this server that users access that has a few files and
folders. Just recently it appears that half of the folders & files are
missing???

However, when I do a search for the files or folders they come up in the
search box. If I try and find the same files or folders from My computer or
explorer or even a mapped drive I see only half of the files and folders
that are actually there?

Anyone know what might cause this? I haven't tried re-booting yet just to
see if it clears up the problem. Ultimately I'd like to know why this
happens? There are no errors in event viewer also.

Thanks,
George

When you find them right-click and choose 'Open Containing Folder'

Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|View, then radio button for "Show hidden files
and folders", then uncheck the box for "Hide protected operating system
files"

It is rather strange. Hide protected is already unchecked before this
post.

Something strange I did noticed. If I do a search on a folder that I know
is there but for some reason I can't see via my computer or explore. The
search will find the folder. The strange thing is If I click the up arrow
to go up a level in the folder tree. I see all the folders that are missing
except the ones I can see in my computer.

IE. there are 20 folders in this directory. If I go into my computer into
the root folder I see 10 of these folders. If I do a search on one of the
missing folders search will find it. Then if I hit the up arrow to go up a
level I see the last 10 folders but not the first 10??

I just rebooted the server and the problem didn't go away??

Thanks,
George

Make sure you're backed up then schedule chkdsk /f to run at next boot. Your
drive may have failed.

ok the files are on a mirrored drive. I checked the state it appears okay.
I'm running a defrag now just to see and also reseting all the file
permissions in that directory. I do have a backup from last night which I
restored to a different server. I'm curious after the defrag and
permission reset (if it didn't work) if I copy a folder from the backup to
the drive if I'll be able to see it.

Permissions wouldn't have anything to do with local visibility. If one of
the drives was kicked offline at some point, then put back online without
rebuilding the array then I would expect to see this behavior. I'm assuming
we're talking hardware raid.

Yes Hardware raid,

But I got to the bottom of it. It wasn't hardware releated
it was user error. I just didn't see it because of the way they moved it.
The folders all looked the same except one.

So it was a user error.

Sorry, thanks for your help
