Missing files and email

After an upgrade from Win98se to WinXP Pro. Files that
were in the "My Documents" directory of Win98se are now
missing, deleted or something. They do not show up with a
undelete utility either.

Has anyone experienced this and is there a way to recover
these files?
 
Yes We have even imaged the drive and uninstalled WinXP
on the imaged.
