Missing file associations - can't run any programs

S

steve

I hope the following description makes sense - it is what
I believe my son has just told me over the phone.

When he boots up his PC, all icons on the desktop, within
the start menu, and when viewed through explorer have the
same ICON. ( Possibly a mini-explorer, not sure)

When he clicks on a program an error message along the
lines of - do not know what program to use for this
shortcut is displayed - shall I search for it - is
displayed.

It looks like all the file associations have been deleted.

I would appreciate any help - this problem is outside my
knowledge of windows.

He is using a Compaq Pressario, windows XP, does not
believe he has any viruses, can still get on the internet
and ahs not loaded any new software. PC was okay last
night when he watched a DVD, ( though students were
supposed to work) and failed this morning.
Thanks

PS hope the above posting makes sense to someone.

Hi Steve,

Have him start here:

EXE and LNK Fix for Windows XP - Line 12
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Good luck!
