Missing Entire Network in My Network Places

XP Pro SP 3

When I open up the My Network Places icon on the desktop (or in the
Explorer) to view all of the contents of the network, I can some other
shared resources, but the Entire Network icon that should be there is not.

Without Entire Network, it's impossible to browse the network. How can I
restore Entire Network to My Network Places?

Thanks Kelly, but that refers to the Directory icon, not the Entire Network
icon. And the article says the Directory icon is not supposed to be in XP,
but the Entire Network is.

I have 5 XP machines and the Entire Network is missing from just one.

I appreciate you doing that search though.

I don't know about SP3. And I don't tend to see an "Entire Network"
option, I find "My Network Places" opens up to show my my network
shares.

What if you go to explorer?
There, I see "enture network" and all the comps in "Microsoft windows
network..workgroup"
And all my network shares.

I tend to access my network shares from "my network places" but I can
of course also access my shares with

start..run... \\ip <ENTER>
or \\compname\dirname

and I could map network drives to any share. e.g. with explorer -
tools..map network drive (ensuring that "reconnect at logon" box is
checked - is useful)

I think this is a "per user" setting, what happens if you logon with
another user? The per user setting is at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network

Name: NoEntireNetwork
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1

This value can be changed and applied without a reboot or logoff.

At the top of the list should be "Entire Network", above all your shares.

Look in the Local Group Policies on the machine.

The policy setting "No "Entire Network" in My Network Places" at:

\User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows
Explorer

is set to "Not Configured". This is just a home system so no policy
settings have ever been changed or configured.

tools...folder options...use windows classic folders
view...list

I have those.

I was wondering if maybe "Client for microsoft windows networks"
uninstalled might cause that option to not be there,, But I think
even with it uninstalled the "entire network" option might appear in
windows explorer.

And if you can access your remote network shares then I guess it has
to be installed.

I tried to cause my comp to have your problem, to find the cause, but
didn't manage it! tried eg Changing workgroup name. Turning off
NetBT.
.
Is it possible that you have a mixed up version of windows. e.g. A
Windows XP but repaired with an sp2 ? Like, msinfo32 shows one
version, and IE help..about shows another. It would be almost
remotely unlikely that that causes your problem though..

I have no idea.

maybe a system restore to when it was ok? that's really quick , like
2min

or a win xp repair installation.

disabling NetBT caused nothing to be visible in "my network places".
(I have heard of a delay when clicking, but I got no icons). On the
computer that NetBT was disabled on, no icons. Even when clicking
"view workgroup computers". Others computers though could see that
comp's network shares though. Enabling NetBT , restarting, clicking
"view workgroup computers", then I got icons - of comps on the same
workgroup / on the network with the same workgroup name.

"viewworkgroupcomputers", then I got icons - of comps on the sameworkgroup/ on the network with the sameworkgroupname.

which when no other comps had the same workgroup name, it only showed
itself, its own computer name. But could still see other comps and
access them by name. \\compname or with VNC you could enter the name
of a comp instead of its IP.
