Missing Discuss Icon

I'm running Internet Explorer Version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828-1920 on a
Windows XP Pro SP1 machine and can't see the "Discuss" icon on the Standard
Toolbar. It also doesn't have a "Messenger" icon but has an icon called
"Research" instead. The icons aren't hidden because they are not listed in
Customize Toolbar.

I've tried to reinstall IE but it's made no difference.

All the other PC's I've seen with the same IE version have the "Discuss"
icon.

Any ideas on what else I can try?

In Tobia <[email protected]> had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

Right click up on the gray section, select customize, in the left pane
scroll down a bit, highlight discuss, and move it over.

The Discussion button in IE is put there by and is for use with the Office
2000/XP suite. It is meant for use on intranets in an business/office
setting, and is not for internet chat-type use. See this article for more
information:

Using the Discussion Feature in Internet Explorer

and....

Also, the Discussion button may be blocked by a registry setting:

Same with the (Windows) Messenger button:

The Research button is also probably there from MS Office:

Thanks for the information Jon.

I've got Office 2003 installed on the machine (it was upgraded from Office
XP) and I still can't see the Discuss icon. We want to use it as part of our
Intranet.

The button doesn't seem to be blocked by a registry setting. Is there a way
I can enable it in the registry instead?

The Messenger button is not really an issue but it also doesn't seem to be
blocked in the registry and still doesn't appear even though Windows
Messenger is installed.
