All

if you only get the wallpaper on start-up and no icons,
check this for me...

check windows task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and click on
processes, now look to see if there is a process running
called SYSU if there is then kill it with end process key
and let me know if your desktop appears and the rest of
xp loads as normal?

I have just tracked this application to be causing my
problem so it may be similar for you.

Have now traced this to a self downloading file that got
on my machine this morning from the internet, it creates
a folder in program files called "ddm" and this is where
the sysu application is located, it puts itself in the
sartup sequence on installation, now i have removed this
from my start-up and all is OK with the world once more.
there are other applications in the ddm folder but until
I find out where it origonates from I will leave the
folder there.

also not ethat I am running Norton firewall and antivirus
and it was not detected by them so guess its not a virus
as such, maybe some ad software thats crap!

Other people have said it's not, for what's that worth (most posters here wouldn't work in an iron lung if you paid them).

Yeah,Ive got that folder as well. It conatins.ddm.exe,sysu.exe and a
folder named "o" and a txt file named temp.txt which contains nothing
other than the letter "O"..
Also if you search for sysu.exe as well as telling you it appears in the
dddm folder it also says it is in C/Windows Prefetch .
You are correct in suggesting it is ad software -check here
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=sysu.exe

I am wondering if this is connected with messges I have been getting since
yesterday when a window appears that says " Its Time" and takes you to an
advertising page .

Thank you Pete thank you INDEED!!!
I have been turningin circles the last 24 hours with this
problem, trying the various proposals to deal with it to
no avail - and your advice worked in less than 30 secs.
