Missing desktop icons

I have a Compaq laptop with the Windows XP OS. When the
computer boots up,the icons are missing on the desktop. I
have tried to reboot several times,but with the same
result. Someone please help me.

Try this...
Right-click the Desktop
Click ARRANGE ICON
Click SHOW DESKTOP ICONS

Dont know how to delete the images on my desktop that I have transported from the website......Two images overlap each other and my background is totally skewered....looks very messy...please help.....

Right click on your desktop, then select PROPERTIES then DESKTOP. Note the
name of the image file. Go to My Computer, rightclick on the "C" drive,
select SEARCH, type in the name of the file and you should be able to go to
it to delete it.

To get the icons (images) to stop overlapping, try going to your Desktop,
right-click, Arrange Icons By, click on Auto Arrange. You can also just
click on the icons and then hit the DEL key.

I forgot to mention that this would only get rid of the Desktop Icons, not
the underlying progams. You would find them by right clicking on the Icon
and then looking at Properties to see what program it was accessing.

Added from the web? Possibly this will help:
Display Properties> Desktop> Customize Desktop
Click on the Web tab. There will be a list of web items currently
residing on the desktop. If the images are there, uncheck them (or one
of them).

Next: May want to port those images into a graphics program. Create
your own wallpaper from them. One where you can see both images but
they don't overlap. Save the results as a .JPG. Place in your My
Pictures folder. Choose as a wallpaper using the controls in Display>
Desktop.
