Missing Codecs

Movie Maker used to work fine, but now it won't let me upload anything.
Everytime I try, it says it don't have the nessicary codecs. since it has
started staying that i've downloaded about a million codecs to try and get it
to work, but nothing works. I've also tried about every video file extention
out there and they all do the same thing. Any help would be greatly
appriciated.

MM is designed to work with wmv and dv-avi files, so start by telling us teh
file types you are trying.

Installing codecs without knowing if theya re the right ones is not a good
idea, so I'd stop that now, as it can cause more trouble for you.

I'm having a similar problem. It was working fine with my wmv files before.
I tried to use it again last week and it keeps saying I'm missing a codec.
I'm using .wmv files that I used to be able to import without a problem.

I can view them just fine with Windows Media Player so I know the files are
ok.

I downloaded some sample videos in wmv format specifically for MM2 and they
import fine. The wmv files that I'm trying to use I converted from .mov
format to .wmv using a tool called Xilsoft MOV converter. There appears to
be something different about these files.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I agree with Graham and will actually take it a step further.
Installing a bunch of codec's from all different sources is not only not a
good idea but it likely made your problem worse.
Start by uninstalling ALL of them and hope none were bugged or bad in some
way.
Then disable all the filters in Movie Maker and try importing your files.
It will probably work now but if it doesn't just download the Microsoft
Windows XP Codec pack from here:
http://www.free-codecs.com/
If it still doesn't work you may very well have a corrupt files issue
because of all those codec's you installed.

ok, i don't know what i did. but it's importing now fine. but now i can only
preview it once. then any time after if i click play it just does nothing.

no, they are importing alright now. but when i try to preview what i've done
so far it wont let me. i can click play as many times as i want and nothing
happens.

Sorry no idea why some will play and others not.

I'm suprised any play at all being divx and mp3.

Try converting them to wmv and wav files?

I reverted back to Windows Media Player 10 and the same files that wouldn't
import now import fine into MM2. Installing Windows Media Player 11 must
have installed some new codecs or created some conflict such that MM2 no
longer understood the formating of the WMV files generated by this Xilsoft
tool.

I'll try some other conversion tools. Maybe something will create files
that work with MM2 and Windows media player 11.
