Missing CD/DVD Drive

G

Guest

I have a Compaq Persario 1103WM, with Win xp SP2 and all ther latest updates
as of 10/14/05, Mcafee & Zone Alarm. It has 512 meg ram, Intel Celeron CPU at
2.53 Ghz.

My problem is there is no CD/DVD-RW in My Computer and any other place,
except it is in Device Manager > Hardware. In DM there is a yellow ball with
the "!" in it. When I go to properties > Device Status, I get "Windows cannot
load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or
missing. (Code 39)." The Bios recognizes the drive in the setup screen.

I first tried the uninstall from the right click pull down menu position of
the drive. The pc recognizes the drive "New device found and displays the
model of the drive" in the bullons. No luck, still the same. I then installed
another CD/DVD-RW I know is good and I get the same reaction. Just for grins,
I installed a CD-RW and got the same reaction.

Is there any way xp's drive drivers can be install with out a full recovery
if the drivers are the problem.

My problem seems to come up after the last set of xp updates. Don't know if
that means anything.

Thanks in advance.

Try power off computer, physically remove cd/dvd hardware and place on the
other IDE cable, set jumper pins correctly on unit and other that gets added
to
on cable.XP will reinstall on restart,if the device still fails, its
probably a hardware
issue,replace or warranty.

Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall

Go to the device manufacturer's website to see if any new drivers are
available. If there are download the file.

Do not get drivers from Windows Update.

Uninstall the device and then reboot. Use the new drivers if downloaded.

Here is some addtional info.

I tried your suggestion to uninstall and reinstall with no help.

I have a CD/DVD burner in an external case that is connected to a pc by USB.
I connect it to this pc and get the same message about a corrupted or missing
file. It works on my laptop and my desktop, both winXp. Is CDgone disigned to
fix a corrupted driver or just registry enties? That is what it looks like to
me when I view cdgone.reg in notebook.

I looked at cdgone.reg in notepad aand found I do not have an entry for the
last key, Cdudf or UdfReadr.

Did you reboot?

[[This happens quite often if one of the third-party packages has been

cdgone.reg removes these keys or values.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11
CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

=- means it deletes the Value Data for UpperFilters and LowerFilters in the
above key.

The - ahead of HKEY means that the following keys, if they exist, are
deleted.

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]

If they do not exist, they can't be deleted.

cdgone.reg does nothing at all with drivers.

Because your external USB CD/DVD drive works on other machines, that shows
that there is nothing wrong with the drive. It is the drivers on whatever
machine that you are having problems with that are screwed up. The drivers
do not exist within the drive itself.
