Missing automatic update on Style

Why isn't the "Automatic Update" option appearing on the Modify style dialog
anymore? I am trying to prevent an automatic update from changing my entire
document but the check box for the automatic update is no longer appearing
above the OK button.

How are you accessing the Modify Style dialog? Is this in a document or a
template? I certainly see it here (Word 2003 SP2).

I'm accessing it from the Styles and Formatting option on the Format Menu
(and then clicking on the style to see the drop down options. (This is from
your instructions to me the last time I had this problem).

I can see the automatic update check box on the Left style, but not on any
of the numbered styles.

Also, the document keeps crashing on me.

What is the Left style? And by numbered styles, do you mean styles such as
List Number, List Number 2, etc.? I haven't been able to open the Modify
Style dialog from the Styles and Formatting pane in any way such that it
doesn't display "Automatically update."

I have no idea where those styles came from. I solved the problem by copying
my text to a new document. Thanks for your help.
